Outdoor Furniture Buyers Guide

OUTDOOR FURNITURE BUYERS GUIDE
Congratulations! You have a beautiful outdoor living space and you are ready to fill it with furniture that’s equally as beautiful. We understand that quality outdoor furniture can be a big investment and you want to shop smart for your space.  We have created a guide that will help you navigate your outdoor living project and hopefully help make this process as easy as possible.

MEASUREMENTS
Knowing your space measurements is extremely important so it’s always helpful to have this information handy, especially when you are buying sets directly off the showroom floor. Our floor sets typically have a total of 3-6 pieces and we do not break floor sets to sell by the piece. You want to be sure you have enough space for everything. NO WORRIES IF YOU DON’T! We can always custom order your furniture so you get only the pieces that will work in your space.  *SIDE NOTE: Special Orders can take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to arrive.
LOCATION
Believe it or not, location is very important when deciding which set to purchase.  You should consider both the location of the furniture in your home, and the location of your actual home itself.
WHY?? Well, it’s important to know how much weather exposure your furniture is going to receive. Make Note: You are buying high quality furniture! It is designed to last a long time outside. But you may want to steer away from some aluminum finishes if you live on the beach. The salt air is very harsh and can affect the manufacturer’s warranty on your furniture.
FABRIC

This is the part that should be fun! But unfortunately, this can be the hardest decision you make. We typically tell our customers to lean toward neutrals when picking out the fabric for your sofa and chairs.  This allows you to easily change your décor later on without having to order different cushions. It’s much easier to change out your pillows and area rugs to achieve a new look!
If you are planning for your furniture to go directly outside, Sunbrella fabric is the way to go.

New lighting always brightens a space and is an way to make an update.
No matter if you are polishing your old brass or adding gold to your space, we think gold is always in style.  Adding one gold accent piece to your home is the perfect way to brighten your home for the spring and summer seasons.

Southern Traditions

Nothing says “Welcome Y’all” quite like having beautiful Rockers lining your home and a swing hanging at the far end of your porch. Add a few Outdoor accent pillows and you easily have Southern perfection at its finest.  As spring approaches, Southerners tend to gravitate to their outdoor living spaces. More specifically, their porches, where for years, families and friends have gathered together to enjoy each other’s company. It’s also known to be a place that iced tea and good conversations are plentiful. It’s hard to imagine any southern porch without its main staples, Rocking Chairs and Porch Swings.

Most wooden rockers and swings tend to last only a handful of years before they need to be sanded and repainted. They’re not made to withstand rain for a long period of time which can result in moisture affecting the integrity of the wood, ultimately shortening the life of your Rockers and Swings to only a few years before needing to be replaced.

Augustus and Carolina offers Rockers and Swings that can endure all types of weather. From the Florida sun to the Mountain snow, our resin products can withstand whatever mother nature throws its way.

Our Rockers and Swings offer the following advantages:

  • Never has to be repainted. EVER.
  • Has a built in UV protectant.
  • Product will not crack or split like regular wood.
  • 20 Year Warranty on frame. 5 years on Woven Resin Inserts.

Providing the longevity and numerous design options available, our rockers and porch swings are a must have for creating that familiar feeling of “Home” that we all love so much; and what better way to say, “Y’all be sure to come back for a visit!”

Holidays on the Porch

Holiday hosting can be stressful. As more company than you're used to flocks to fill your space, extend the life of your patio (and thus the size of your home) by opening your doors to the outside! If you're able to open your home and host amidst your outdoor living space you will extend your space greatly. Try this method and add on room to your home to grow the number of people you can accommodate.

Finding warmth outside when having guests this fall and winter season is simple with these expert tips:

  • Add a sheepskin throw to your adirondacks for a more comforting seat.
  • Candles and lanterns go a long way in adding visibility as it gets darker earlier, while string lights add ambiance.
  • Fire pits generate warmth when the evening cold rolls in.
  • Layer wool throws and curl up under a blanket while taking in the fresh air, fireside.
  • Rugs pad the cold ground and add a layer of interest and visual appeal.

Happy holiday hosting!

Luxe Lodge

Save yourself from cabin fever this winter, with decadent details and cozy touches that set the scene of a luxe lodge. Nature inspires interior spaces and though it's cold outside, certain natural touches from the great outdoors can evoke a very warm atmosphere inside. Stick with au naturel influences, like the ones mentioned below:

    Chosen from the elements:

    • Faux fur is great for pillows and throws.
    • Hair-on-hide seating, ottomans, and rugs will wow as statement pieces.
    • Farm tables fit right in.
    • Sheepskin throws and rugs add a nice texture.
    • Antlers accessorize your tabletops or lighting fixtures.
    • Logs double as art when you put your firewood storage on display.

    Motifs:

    • Animal prints make your textiles pop.
    • Plaid is the perfect print for a warm, wool throw.
    • Animals / livestock are interesting subject matter for over-sized art.

Find a combo that's both cozy, and chic!

    Pattern Play With Pillows

As the seasons change, we often have the desire to revamp the space inside our home. The transition from summer to fall lends itself to incorporating more textiles for a cozier vibe. Fall makes you think of chunky knits, furs, wool and the like. Take a look at your upholstery as a starting point for transformation. What colors, prints, and motifs can you layer into the existing color scheme of your living space?

Throw pillows are the way to go. Pillows can change the overall image and appeal of your living areas, and require zero heavy lifting! It's all about creating texture, and layering.

When it comes to pairing your pillows, stay within the same color family and mix prints, or accent your current decor with a contrasting pop of color. Vary the scale of prints for a fun and personalized setting. This goes for your outdoor living space too!

    Winning formulas to try:

    1 geometric print + 1 solid color + 1 pattern

    1 large scale pattern + 1 geometric + 1 small scale pattern

Pillows are not a less-is-more category. The more the merrier!

    Dining, Al Fresco

Your outdoor living space is a perfect venue to spend the transitional time between summer and fall. As you begin to feel fall's first chills in the air at sunrise and sunset each day, take advantage of dining alfresco. Having your meals outside in the open air is the perfect pastime for this brisk weather. From morning coffee to cocktail hour, put your outdoor space to use this season!

You'll want your outdoor space to be livable and well equipped with all of the amenities you may need for dining (an outdoor kitchen doesn't hurt, but is by no means necessary!). Start with a table large enough to seat all of your regulars. If there are two of you 80% of the time, no need for a long rectangular dining table! A small square or round one will do just fine. Keep the elongated shapes (rectangles and ovals) for larger live-in families. Alternatively if your household headcount varies daily many outdoor dining tables are now available with a leaf to extend the size of your outdoor table.

For the tablescape: you don't have to get too fancy. Natural materials work great here (remember - you are in nature!). Think straw, raffia, or seagrass for your place settings accompanied by linen or cotton napkins. A grouping of your small potted plants or succulents will work wonders as a centerpiece. Set the tone with details that feel comfortable and inviting to get the most out of your outdoor space this fall.

    Oriental Rugs, Reimagined

The newest destination for an oriental rug is the kitchen! The kitchen is hands-down the most-used room in the home (not to mention your loved ones' favorite!). Oriental runners are lining the most stylish of kitchen runways these days, adding a pop of pattern, interest, and intrigue. Nothing like the warmth and vibrancy of an oriental rug to accent your kitchen and make it feel more like home.

Antique oriental rugs stand the test of time and are extremely durable. They make a great choice for a high traffic area like the kitchen. And don't worry about those spills - they're easily removed with a damp cloth.

Things to look for in an oriental rug:

    • Antique rugs acquire a gorgeous patina with age - this is a characteristic of vegetable dye
    • Hand-knotted rugs are considered to be the better choice, and an important determinant of quality - hand-knotted rugs are made completely by hand
    • Oriental rugs made of wool are of the highest quality + durability
    • Pigmentation: pastels are just as exquisite as brights; the level of color is up to you!

Make sure those kitchen floors of yours aren't being ignored! Inspiration, below!

    The Outdoor Room

The outdoor room, i.e. the patio as an extension of your indoor space, is having a major moment. In fact, a patio is no longer just a patio, it now functions as a part of the home, and can be fully equipped with all of the amenities of your interior space. When fashioning your outdoor room, incorporate layers of accessories into an open and inviting layout. The outcome: more fresh air for yourself, your loved ones, and your guests, plus a tan if you're lucky!

Here are a few key elements to creating an outdoor room that flows and feels just like home:

    • Upholstered seating.
    • Occasional tables + garden stools.
    • Lighting, both electrical (lamps, pendants, string lights, or chandeliers), and natural (lanterns or candles).
    • Plush pillows and throws.
    • Shaded areas + ceiling fans or umbrellas for staying cool during the day.
    • Fire pits or a fireplace for added warmth at night.
    • Functional tabletop accessories like trays.
    • Potted plants.

    Bonus amenity - a pool!

Below you'll find inspiration for beating the heat while enjoying your outdoor space. Make a splash with the following settings - which will definitely leave you with a little pool envy!

    Dining Room Mash Up

The dining room has met its ultimate match: mix and match, that is. Mix and match seating is a fun, quirky design that can help you optimize your accommodations and even add extra spots around your table.

Start by bringing together different styles of chairs, and then add space-saving benches or settees into the mix once you’ve got the hang of it. The secret to achieving harmony is this: pair off-balance pieces of similar material, finish, style, or design, and you will master the art of the mismatch. If you’d like to maintain symmetry, try a large upholstered armchair at either end of your table for the host and hostess, and either armless chairs or a pair of benches on opposite sides.

    Happy hosting!
